Summary

This chapter examines a number of issues relevant to the documentation of achievement motivation in women. While the findings are still tentative, the present data suggest that women’s definitions of achievement may be different from those of men, although as cultural definitions of gender roles change, modes and arenas of achievement may be changing. The study of achievement motivation is significant to the analysis of women’s power because achievement is central to the concept of personal power. Achievement represents a personal definition of accomplishment, of attaining mastery over an area of skill or knowledge. As defined in this volume, skill and knowledge are potential forms of power. They can be utilized to exert influence and control over valued resources, actions and relationships. Thus, an understanding of what motivates women to achieve provides insights into how they develop and exert power.
